Railways On The Air

Swindon and Cricklade Railway celebrates the anniversary of the first steam powered passenger railway

Swindon & Cricklade Railway
Saturday 26 & Sunday 27 September 2015

The weekend of 26th and 27th September sees the Swindon and Cricklade Railway, join in with many other heritage railways in an event called “Railways on the Air”, using the call sign GBOSCR.

The Railways on the air (ROTA) weekend usually takes place each year on the weekend closest to the 27th September. This date celebrates the anniversary of the first steam powered passenger railway which took place on 27th September 1825 - the first passenger train ran on a line in the North East of England from Darlington to Stockton.

At the time of writing, 38 heritage railways are due to participate in this growing, but, unusual event. Which, interestingly, includes two railways in India.

Thus, all of these railways, each with their own call sign, will be able to communicate with each other, as well as with radio hams all over the world. And visiting members of the public will get the chance to communicate by radio with other railways, and hams elsewhere in the world.
