Summer Holiday

Kelly Jobanputra checks out the 60's musical at the Wyvern Theatre - REVIEW

Summer Holiday Review
Review by Kelly Jobanputra

The Wyvern Theatre was full of around 200 excited young people dressed in 60s clothes last Friday (25th August) as they took to the stage for the Youth Project 2017 of Summer Holiday.

All of the local cast had only been working together for two weeks before the opening night of their three day run of this cult classic film which starred Cliff Richard and that's something to be very proud of.

Their hard work defiantly paid off as the audience were captivated by their enthusiasm and presence throughout the night; with the part of Don becoming an obvious favourite fairly early on. Ethan Hughes played this main character in this ultimate party musical and his voice was exceptional as well as being beyond his young years. He really did have fantastic timing and if he continues to perform like he did in this show then his dream of getting to the West End will become a reality.

Because the production was so full on from the very start, it did take a little while to get into the swing of things but this wasn't a bad thing as by making a show so in your face initially - you're bound to suck the audience in and demand their attention.

The little bus going across the stage was unique and humorous; it got several laughs from an audience that was full of a real mixed bag of ages and characters.

The choreography was outstanding and never wavered; it looked as if each and every one of the children enjoyed taking part in this project as their faces lit up when they moved their bodies in time to the beats.

Despite all of the wonderful singing and dancing however, my favourite part of this youth project was the comedic lines that were thrown in. Stella (played by Omolola Funsho) and Jerry (played by Jack McLoughlin) were very amusing and really were some of the top stars in my eyes. They both had that extra something which you need to have in spades in order to do well in the performing arts.

I always enjoy the summer youth project at the Wyvern; it's so important that we encourage local talent to gain their confidence and spread their wings. I look forward to seeing what will be planned for 2018.
