Wyvern re-opens
To be or not to be, that was the question!
But, after 10 months of hard work the doors finally opened today to reveal the newly-refurbished Wyvern Theatre. Swindon Borough Council Leader, Roderick Bluh, and Chief Executive Gavin Jones were the first to tread the boards in the theatre today, which is due to re-open for performances on Tuesday, September 25.
The Wyvern was closed in late 2006 following the discovery of asbestos in the main stage area. At which point it was decided to embark on a £1.37 million refurbishment project. "This is brilliant news for Swindon," said Cllr Bluh, "the theatre looks fantastic and I’m sure audiences will be thrilled when they see what a great job has been done. "The end result has been well worth the wait, and I hope, this exciting venue will help establish Swindon as a destination of choice for performing arts." The revitalised, 600-capacity theatre boasts new seats, carpets, a custom-built ceiling, the latest technology lighting and sound system and re-fitted bars and café. "We cannot wait to throw open the doors and welcome people back to the Wyvern," said Andrew Hill, Theatre Director. "It is testament to the partnership between HST [Hetherington Seelig Theatres] and Swindon Borough Council that we have worked through this difficult time for the building and are now is a position to present more fantastic shows." Open day A free open event to look at the newly furbished Wyvern runs from noon until 2pm on Friday, September 21 and from 11am until 4pm on Saturday, September 22 and Sunday September 23.
