Top Tips For September

The month to enjoy the harvest and last days of summer - and get digging!

What an absolutely glorious summer we had here in Swindon! it seems a shame to be saying goodbye to the warm sunshine and blue skies, but there's still plenty to be done in the garden this autumn.

With the last days of summer behind us, let's look forward to sowing the seeds for next year!

Essential things to do in September
  1. Plant spring-flowering bulbs such as crocus, daffodils and hyacinths.
  2. Grow your own garlic ready for next year. Just break up a clove and plant the bulbs in the ground - it's that easy!
  3. Check the shed roof. It may be the last chance to repair any holes or tears before the rain and wind really start.
  4. Remember to shut the windows overnight in the greenhouse if you want to keep the heat in and keep growing for as long as possible.
  5. Give the lawn a good forking! Ideal for helping drainage in the wet months ahead.
  6. If you're lucky to have apple, pear of plum trees then don't leave the dropped fruit to rot. Pick out the best ones and get cooking!
  7. Clay soil? It's common in new gardens and estates, so take the opportunity to turn some fertliser or organic matter in before the frost starts.
  8. Give the garden furniture and the barbecue a brush and perhaps put it under cover. Who knows, you may still be able to use it but chances are you won't.
