A History of The Workhouse 

A new book delves into the fascinating history of the Stratton Workhouse

In The Shadow of The Workhouse by Caroline Ockwell & Graham Carter

Launching later this week is 'In The Shadow of the Workhouse', a 224-page book which looks at the changing scene of the Stratton Workhouse in the early 1900s.

 

The site, now St Margaret's Hospital, was opened in 1846 with the primary intention of providing employment as well as food and lodgings for the infirm.

 

The new book, written by keen local historians Caroline Ockwell and Graham Carter, uses poet and author Alfred Williams' visit to the workhouse in 1911/12 as the starting point, and includes stories and memories contributed by people with personal connections, as well as drawing comparisons with the welfare systems of the 21st century.

 

The book will be launched at Swindon Central Library on Thursday 11 December at 7.15pm, and will be available for the special price of £10.00.

 

All proceeds from book sales go towards the Alfred Williams Heritage Society's work in spreading knowledge about the inspirational life of Alfred Williams (1877 - 1930), who was born in South Marston and wrote a number of works of poetry and prose, including A Wiltshire Village (1912) and Life in a Railway Factory (1915).
