After an exhilarating season opener, Swindon were brought back down to earth with a bump this evening as League Two Exeter City stunned Town at the County Ground.

 

Anyone fearing Mark Cooper would field an understrength side were quickly put at ease, with hattrick man Nathan Byrne and Jon Obika among those lining up against the Grecians.

 

Swindon started brightly, with Exeter largely forced to play on the break.

 

But despite good chances for Kasim, Obika and Stewart - the net simply refused to bulge.

 

Town were made to pay for their wastefulness with 37 minutes on the clock. The bright Alex Nicholls charging through the Town defence and slotting past Vigouroux with ease.

 

And just minutes later, the sucker-punch!

 

Weaving through the Town defence again, 27-year old Nicholls unleashed a shot that proved too hot to handle for Vigoroux who could only parry to Wheeler for the easiest of finishes.

 

The Robins came out fighting in the second half, and with 25 minutes remaining on the clock they finally had the breakthrough.

 

Jon Obika rifling home a powerful left footed strike from 25 yards which had the Exeter keeper beaten all ends up.

 

But despite their best efforts, the equaliser failed to materialise, leaving the home support to reflect on a first round exit for the first time in seven years.
