Poor start costs Lucy
The 30-year-old, starting in lane nine, never recovered from a poor start and failed to feature in the top three thoughout the race.
Gold went to Ukraine's Inna Osypenko-Radomska, who Wainwright finished second to in the semi-final.
"I just never got going," Wainwright told the BBC, "and that's a disappointment to me after such a good semi."
Lucy Wainwright has made it to the final of the K1 500m canoeing competition, after crossing the line in second place at this morning's semi-final.
Coming back from a fifth place position by the halfway stage, Wainwright produced a blazing second 250m - finishing in a time of 1:52.280, and pipped to the post only by the Ukraine's Inna Osypenko-Radomska.
The K1 500m final takes place this Saturday 23 August at 4.20pm local time - 9.20am our time.
