Legendary Night of Football

Swindon legends turn out for the Prospect

Lou Macari shouting from the dug out. Duncan Shearer knocking 'em in up front. Chris Kamara controlling the midfield.

It was just like old times at the County Ground last night.

A whole host of former Town legends turning out for a one-off Legends Match in aid of local charity the Prospect Hospice.

A game featuring some of the Robins most familiar and famous faces including, amongst others, Jan Aage Fjortoft, Paul Bodin, Dave Hockaday, Charlie Henry, Nicky Summerbee, David Kerslake, Tom Jones and Luc Nijholt, with the two teams managed by former Town bosses Macari and John Gorman.

Even ex-Arsenal and England star Paul Merson joined in the fun.

Names from the past all brought together by ex-Town star Phil King, who organised - and took a starring role - in the game, watched by over 4,500 fans packed into the Arkell's stand.

"It's been an absolutely unbelievable evening," King told us.

"All the players have loved coming back here and playing, and the fans, well, they've been brilliant.

"So many people have turned out to support us tonight and we hope to raise a significant sum for the Prospect. It really couldn't have gone much better."

Gorman's XI eventually coming out on top in a match played out in the best possible spirit but still with a keen competitive edge.

Fjortoft's hattrick the key to victory in a 6-3 win. The Norwegian celebrating each strike with his trademark 'plane' celebration.

Hatful of goals:
Jan Arge Fjortoft, who flew in from
Scandinavia especially to play

"I haven't done that for a while," Town's former strikeman admmitted, "and it brought back a lot of memories.

"My time here at Swindon was very special, so when Phil asked me to play and I said yes straight away.

"It's been fantastic to play here again. And I'd do it again in a flash."
