Beauty treatments explained

So what is Dermabrasion, exactly? Endermologie? Shellac? We explain all...

Beauty Treatments Swindon
There has been a real growth in recent years in the number of beauty treatments available - both traditional and non-traditional.

From non-surgical facelifts to simple facials, electrolysis to eyebrow tinting, the choice really is quite incredible.

But like us, do you get confused about all the technical terms? Beauty treatments that sound great - but what is a dermabrasion exactly? Endermologie, what's that? And Shellac nails? Hmmm?

So here's our quick guide to explaining just these types of treatments, what they can do for you..... and, most importantly, ladies (and gents) where you can experience it in Swindon.

For the Face
For younger, firmer looking skin

Skin Needling featuring the Titanium Dermaroller

What a mouthful, eh?!

This improves the skin on your face by putting tiny, ever-so-small pin-pricks (using the roller) in the all the right area to encourage 'healing' and new skin to grow. Sounds drastic but works surprising well with minimum or zero discomfort.

Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion is a non-invasive surgical procedure that essentially removes the upper layer of skin cells.

Micro-dermabrasion
Micro-demabrasion
A full-on demabrasion can involve laser treatment, so is always performed by a specialist clinic, but in most cases, the treatment on offer is a MICRO-demabrasion.

This involves exfoliating the skin by 'firing' very fine crystals at it, while at the same time a vacuum tube sweeps up the crystals & skin debris, with - again - minimum or zero discomfort.

Dermalogica face mapping
Know your zones!

Not actually a treatment itself, but Dermalogica face mapping is used by skin therapists to essentially split the face into the fourteen zones to highlight which treatment may be best - so that a greasy area, say, can be treated differently from a dry area.

Threading

We've all heard of waxing but threading can be better and more effective way to remove unwanted facial hair on the eyebrows and around the mouth.

Threading is an old oriental art that uses a length of twisted cotton to catch and pull out the hairs. Threading is best for those of us who have a large amount of eyebrow hair and surrounding facial hair, as tweezing simply takes too long.

The main benefit of threading is the way it shapes the eyebrow, not just underneath but also the top.

For the legs
Cellulite treatments

Ahh, cellulite. The one bikini-wearing women across the world hate the most. But there is hope - and it's called Endermologie!

Endermologie

They say cellulite is caused by the build-up of fat cells, and Endermologie is basically an extra-deep tissue massage that stimulates blood flow to encourage fat breakdown.

The system uses rollers and suction cups to produce the intensity required, see pic. below.

Bloomin Beautiful in Victoria Road are the only salon in the Swindon area to offer this treatment.

For the Nails
Shellac? Minx?

Ladies love nice nails, don't they? And there are two new names on the block when it comes to making them look extra-special!

Shellac

Now this stuff is amazing! This product is thin and strong enough to be applied similarly to nail polish, but it is cured in a way that gives it great flexibility and durability.

It also has the incredible shine associated only with gel nails, but much longer lasting.

Minx

Minx Nails
Minx is a solid film with an adhesive backing that is heat activated. The heat gives Minx the conformability to fit over the compound curve of a nail, and seals the film onto the bed.

Unlike a polish, there is no drying time and no smudging can occur.

Application is done quickly then you are good to go. And what’s amazing is the vast choice of patterns and colours!

Specialised treatments

These are few more terms you may have heard of, but could do with an explanation! All are available in Swindon.

Electrolysis

This basically gets rid of unwanted hair, and helps to prevent it growing back.

The procedure involves inserting a metal probe into the hair follicle where an electrical current is then discharged to cauterise the hair follicle, hoping to render the follicle incapable of producing another hair.

Red vein treatment

This is a specialised form of electrolysis that helps to remove any unsightly red veins that may appear on the face or body, and can also help to remove skin tags.

Botox

Botox Swindon
A celebrity favourite! Botox is a wrinkle-smoothing product which is injected into specific areas of the face.

Botox relaxes the facial muscles and prevents creases and wrinkles of the kind most commonly formed by smiling and frowning.

Collagen replacement

Collagen is a natural protein that can be injected into the face to smooth out facial lines, plump up lips and generally improve the appearance of the skin.

.....something a bit different

Hopi Ear Candling

Hopi Ear Candling
We'll bet you've never heard of this one!

This is a treatment that has been used for centuries to relieve ear problems and, they say, highly effective for those feeling 'bunged up'.

A candle (a linen tube with essential oils) is rested on the opening of the ear. The heat and oils work to re-balance pressure and stimulate the blood and lymph.

The treatment includes a deep facial massage to help relieve congestion around the sinuses.

And for those interested!....

What is a Colonic Irrigation, exactly?

A colonic is the safe, gentle infusion of water into the colon via the rectum. No chemicals or drugs are involved and the entire therapy is - according to those who have tried in -  very relaxing!

It is know to help those who suffer from gas, bloating, cramping pains, acne and other skin complaints, arthritis, and a list of bowel complaints such as diverticulitis and irritable bowel.
