No one should ever have a bad hair day in Swindon.

The town is proudly the home to some of the best hairdressers in the country and we all spend valuable time sitting back and asking them to find the perfect cut and style, and in many cases to perform near miracles.

We colour it, perm it, weave it, straighten it - but do we really take care of it after we've left the hairdresser. Probably not.

Keeping your hair healthy will make it less expensive to take care of, so, although we'll leave the expert advice to the experts, here's a few tips to avoid the dry, damaged, over-processed look that we all want to avoid.

1. Have your hair cut regularly

Most people will need a trim every six weeks to keep their hair shaped the way they want it and an excellent cut will go a long way towards making your hair look its very best.

2. Have chemical treatments done professionally

This means perms, straightening, and colour. You will get the results you want with the least amount of damage by using a professional stylist because, although you may find some treatments expensive staying indoors for 6 weeks after a home-perm disaster is an experience none of us want to enjoy.

3. Wash your hair gently

Use a gentle shampoo and about once a month, switch to a clarifying shampoo to remove residues. Using a clarifying shampoo for three to five days a month will help your regular shampoo do a better job. When you wash your hair, massage the shampoo in gently. Don't scrub or twist the hair. Remember, it's most vulnerable when it's wet.

4. Avoid heat and sun

Blow dryers and styling appliances damage your hair causing it to dry out and making it brittle. Whenever possible, allow your hair to air dry instead of using a blow dryer and having your hair cut professionally to minimize the amount of styling required to get the look you want can really help.

When you must be out in the sun, try not to overdo it because the UV rays from the sun will not only damage you skin but also do damage to your hair.

5. Be gentle with wet hair

Your hair is most vulnerable when it is wet and much more likely to break and cause split ends. Avoid combing or brushing wet hair and twisting your hair up into a towel when it is wet, although convenient, should be avoided also. Gently squeezing the hair with a towel to remove excess water.

6. Check your styling products

Although much less common, styling products that contain alcohol should be avoided. Alcohol will dry and damage your hair so check the ingredients of your mousses, gels and sprays to see if they contain alcohol. Your stylist can recommend products that aren't damaging.

7. 'Moisturise' your hair

Just like the rest of your body your hair need moisture and even oily hair needs occasional moisturizing. A hot oil treatment at home once a week or at least once a month will keep your hair glossy and prevent dry, split ends. Use a conditioner for your hair type on a regular basis for in between treatments.
