Hairy legs and more!

Football

Paul Sturrock was keen to stress that speculation linking him with Plymouth Argyle was exactly that – pure speculation.

In our weekly video interview the manager spoke of his disappointment over the results of recent weeks, despite some good performances - but it was now time to stop moaning about bad luck and injuries.

Instead he was adamant that he would, “take a dirty victory on Saturday rather than a very very good performance.”

“Winning can become a habit and it’s one we need to get back into.”

We also spoke to Lee Peacock who admitted he can’t wait for Saturday’s game with Bristol Rovers.

“The result against them last season has left a bitter taste and all the lads just want to put that and the recent run of poor results to rights.”

Speedway

Tonight will see Swindon Speedway announce one of the new riders for the 2008 season.

Following the disappointment of last season, team manager Alun Rossiter is hoping to assemble a team capable of finally ending there Elite League duck.

With Leigh Adams already signed up for next season the management are keen to stress to fans that financial limitations have to be considered – especially after last season when the purse strings were seriously stretched.

Athletics

Local runner Wendy Nichols led from start to finish to take the title at the British & Irish Masters Cross Country Championships.

The Great Britain International withstood a strong challenge from a number of Irish runners around the Stormont Estate course in Belfast.

The Fairford athlete counted the victory as one of her best but it wasn’t easy.

“It was a real struggle but I’m delighted to take the victory although I was very tired afterwards.”

Golf

David Howell is once again struggling in his last tournament of a disappointing 2007.

Playing at the inaugural Hana Bank Vietnam Masters, Howell shot an opening round of 78 (+6).

However, the Swindon star is currently undergoing a number of swing changes with his coach Clive Tucker and has admitted that, “it will probably get worse before it gets better.”

But with a 7 week lay-off after this tournament he will have plenty of time to prepare for a hopefully more prosperous 2008.
