Swindon Town 5 Gillingham 0

Five-star Town go goal crazy

Coca-Cola League One

Saturday 06 October 2007

RESULT: Swindon Town 5 Gillingham 0

Swindon scorers: JP McGovern 4 mins; S Cox 6, 62; B Paynter 52, 84

It was the result and more importantly the performance that everyone at Swindon Town were looking for – a 5-0 thumping of a very poor Gillingham side.

The Town players came flying out the traps and were 2-0 up inside the first ten minutes.

Jon-Paul McGovern started the rout with a sublime volley following some good work from Christian Roberts – the two wingers both supporting matching new look blonde hairstyles.

Just two minutes later the ball was in the net again, this time Simon Cox was on hand to slot the ball into the top right corner, in front of the already dejected travelling fans.

The home side had to wait until the second-half for the third, Billy Paynter smashing the ball past a helpless Simon Royce in the Gillingham goal, just before the hour mark.

Cox almost extended Town's lead with an audacious over-head kick but was denied by the foot of the post. However, he didn't have to wait long for his second and Town's fourth as he headed home Jon-Paul McGovern's right wing cross.

Paynter claimed his fifth goal in his last two home games when he latched on to a poor pass from Barry Cogan before easily rounding the keeper and finding the net, sending the Town End fans into chants of 'Easy Easy Easy.'

Both strikers could and probably should have completed their hat-tricks in the final minutes, but were denied by some good saves from Royce.

With all the off field problems at the County Ground manager Paul Sturrock will no doubt be delighted with the way his side responded.
