40 years on from winning it, Town bowed out of the League Cup at the first hurdle tonight.

In an entertaining game that could quite easily have been 4-4 at half-time, Swindon lead thanks to..... guess who? Cox and Paynter.

Town's in-form striking partners on target again, both swiftly responding to QPR taking the lead through Balanta just after the half-hour.

But after the break, Town's millionaire visitors fought back with a double quick-time wammy of their own.

First the lively Blackstock on 46 minutes, then Delaney eight minutes later showing Town just why QPR are hot favourites for promotion to the Premiership.

Old face back at the County Ground

There was an old visitor to SN1 last night - and although many of the young fans didn't know him from Adam, the older generations queued excitedly to meet the man who many claim transformed the Town back in the 1980s.

Ex-Swindon Town manager Lou Macari in Swindon
Town legend:
Lou Macari at the County Ground
launching his autobiography

Ex-Town manager Lou Macari was at the County Ground to sign copies of his autobiography, "Football, My Life" before Town's Carling Cup tie with Championship side QPR.

The 59-year-old former Celtic, Manchester United and Scotland international midfielder led our boys from the base of the old fourth division to the brink of the first, after taking up his first management job at Swindon in 1984.

During his four years as Town boss, Macari raised our game with two promotions - becoming Fourth Division champions in 1986 and Third Division play-off winners in 1987.

"It's nice to be back," Macari told us, "and good to see the Town on the up it would seem."
