Coca-Cola League One

RESULT: Gillingham 1 Swindon Town 1

Gillingham scorer: G Richards 2
Swindon scorer: H Aljofree 88

A late Hasney Aljofree goal was enough to save Swindon’s blushes against struggling Gillingham.

The captain was on hand to flick home a late equaliser in a game that they struggled to get to grips with from the start.

With Gillingham fighting for their league safety they got off to the perfect start when they took the lead inside the first two minutes.

Following a foul from Jamie Vincent, Nicky Southall delivered a pin-point free-kick which was met un-marked by Garry Richards who easily nodded the ball past Peter Brezovan in the Town goal.

Despite both teams having chances it was the home side that was dominating proceedings and it was they who looked the more likely to extend their lead.

Unfortunately for Swindon their cause wasn’t helped by the loss of Jerel Ifil mid-way through the half with a back injury – to be replaced by youngster Sean Morrison who made his first senior appearance for the club.

Town managed to see out until half-time when undoubtedly there would have been some stern words from manager Maurice Malpas.

HALF TIME

However, his words didn’t appear to have had the desired effect as Swindon continued to struggle against their relegation-threatened opponents.

In an attempt to adopt a more direct approach, Billy Paynter was introduced in place of Anthony McNamee as Malpas switched to a 4-3-3 formation.

A late corner was the undoing of the home sides dogged performance as Aljofree was on hand to flick home Sean Morrison's powerful header from Jon-Paul McGovern’s cross.

The result has left Gillingham precariously close to the drop-zone, and with only one game remaining they trail Cheltenham by two points.
