Maurice Malpas and Dave Byrne FA Cup Disaster against Barnet
Spot of bother:
Maurice Malpas and assistant
manager Dave Byrne
Swindon were humiliatingly dumped out of the F.A. Cup following a disastrous penalty shoot out where no less then four Town players failed to find the net.

Having taken the lead late in the first half it looked as though they were heading for what turned out to be a potential fourth round tie against local rivals Bristol Rovers - who prevailed in their replay against Fulham.

Striker Billy Paynter was hero turned villian as he managed to find the net at both ends of the field. Following his first-half strike he proceeded to turn the ball past his own keeper early in the second-half.

This unfortunate error allowed the home side back into the tie - something that had seemed unlikely going into the break.

Sending off

The game took another twist on 71 minutes when Barnet midfielder Michael Leary was given his marching orders for a heavy two-footed tackle on Sofi Zaaboub.

The tricky Frenchman was sadly stretched off the pitch following the incident and was replaced by Christian Roberts.

In an attempt to make their advantage pay, Paynter and substitute Barry Corr both had chances to finish off Barnet only to find the Londoners' goalkeeper, Robert Beckwith, more than up to the challenge.

In extra time neither side managed to create any clear cut chances - ensuring the game went to penalties.

However, this outcome didn't seem to suit the Robins - as Paynter (hit bar), Roberts (missed target), Aljofree (fired over) and finally Comminges (saved by goalkeeper) all missed from the spot.

The ultimate penalty being that Town have now missed out on a potentially lucrative fourth round tie at home to Bristol Rovers.

"I'm extremely disappointed," commented Maurice Malpas, "the game should never have gone to penalties, especially with them down to ten men."
