Pub-lic argument

Swindon pub landlord confronts Prime Minister

It was anything but a routine stop-off in Swindon for Prime Minister Gordon Brown today – thanks to a pub landlord from Penhill.

While the PM was inside Drove Community Campus in the town centre talking to school children and local residents alongside Swindon MP Anne Snelgrove, John Doyle from The Queensfield pub arrived to make his thoughts known on the state of the economy.

In front of the waiting press, Mr Doyle forthrightly challenged the accompaning Secretary of State for Education, Ed Miliband, with his views on the Government and the consequences on his business – before being ushered away to meet the Prime Minister himself.

A one-to-one meeting that lasted just over 10 minutes, before Mr Doyle returned to speak in praise that Mr Brown has taken time to speak to him about his problems, and would soon announce help with businesses like his struggling to pay their rates.

The PM then following up with his own comments about his unexpected meeting, as he spoke to the media outside the school.

SwindonWebTV right at the head of the press pack, where we captured both Mr Doyle and the Prime Minister as they spoke. See our SWTV video above.
