Canal Walk switch on marks development of public realm

The new water feature in the town centre that replaces the old Jubilee clock was officially switched-on today.

The stainless steel structure is part of an on-going transformation of Canal Walk, which includes the use of stone paving, new benches and interactive lights to bring the areas to life.

Refurbishment programme:
Cllr Gary Perkins, designated Cabinet Member for Regeneration at Swindon Borough Council

The £3.9 million refurbishment programme began in August 2009, and already bringing new and improved landscape and outdoor facilities for local residents and visitors to enjoy.

New developments to come will also include an installation of living green walls.

"We are delighted that the Canal Walk refurbishment is coming along so well and that the people of Swindon can enjoy their new surroundings," commented Cllr Gary Perkins, designated Cabinet Member for Regeneration at Swindon Borough Council.

"The importance of public spaces cannot be underestimated as it is the area in between the building, as well as the buildings themselves, which leave people with an impression of the town an give it an identity."
