The Future's So Bright You'll Need To Wear Shades

Abu Dhabi-style revelopment of Swindon town centre revealed

It's good to see schools have got involved in the redevelopment of Swindon town centre.

The Adver today published what we think is surely the picture of the year so far - an artist's impression of how the new Whalebridge roundabout will look after a multi-million pound regeneration is completed.

Swindon future

Gone will be the old roundabout system with its outdated underground walkway, to be replaced with what looks like a futuristic Abu Dhabi-style sand-coloured open space complete with oasis and 4-lane freeway - plus the Swindon equivalent of palm trees.

A large Arabian Beduin-type marquee (top left) seems an additional part of the plan.

Public transport is also central to the new scheme with Thamesdown Transport buses appearing to roam freely across lanes of traffic like camels in the desert.

Work is expected to be completed by Christmas and forms the first part of the £350 million pound Union Square project.
