UTC Building 

The college will be located within Swindon’s historic railway village. The heritage of the site creates an appropriate link between the ‘historic engineering’ of Swindon’s past and the ‘engineering future’ of the high technology companies helping establish the college.

Working closely with these sponsors and partners, the college will be designed and equipped with brand new state of the art equipment in a purpose built learning environment.

A key philosophy in the building design is to ‘preserve and enhance’ the railway village conservation area, with an aim to use ‘transparent’ building styles to allow students to understand how the building is engineered and constructed.

We spoke to architect Jon James from Scott Brownrigg about the design of Swindon's first University Technical College...

Key elements in this iconic design include:

- Light filled professional workshops and classrooms that reflect the industry workplace.

- A lecture theatre with state of the art facilities.

- An innovative ‘Hub’ space for generating ideas, socialising and inspiring the students.

- Revival of the sites existing water tower, to offer a vivid portrayal of the importance of the buildings site in Swindon’s engineering history.

- Outside landscaping that provides a space for working, relaxation, reflection and socialising.

- Incorporation of Low Zero Carbon technologies including solar thermal collectors.
