RIP Sir George Martin

True music legend and friendly face in Highworth dies aged 90

The tributes have been pouring in today for music genius and unassuming local personality Sir George Martin, who sadly died yesterday.

Sir George, who was most famous for masterminding every Beatles' recording at his EMI studio on Abbey Road from 1962 until their split in 1970, lived in the village of Coleshill, just outside Swindon, for more than fifty years.

He was a regular friendly face seen until very recently shopping in Highworth and nearby, where the man who also produced the Bond theme 'Goldfinger' and the soundtrack to 'Live & Let Die' and hundreds of other hits, was a popular figure.

He was knighted in 2006 for his contribution to music and popular culture.

Fifth Beatle

Martin is often described as the 'Fifth Beatle' for his close collaboration with chief songwriters John Lennon & Paul McCartney after he signed the then unknown band to Parlophone in 1962.

"We came up with the ideas, he made them happen," McCartney, who also worked extensively with Martin after the Beatles broke up, said.

After the news was broken last night by fellow Beatle Ringo Starr on Twitter, flowers and notes of condolence have already started to arrive at the entrance to Sir George's and his wife, Lady Judy Martin's house in Coleshill.

Sir George, you will be sorely missed.
