Swindon branch of children's charity appeals for more volunteers

 

A children's charity in Swindon is calling for more volunteers as it aims to bolster its life-changing services for people in need.

 

The NSPCC’s Swindon Service Centre, in London Court, Old Town, provides a range of programmes and drop-in sessions to support children and their families in the local area.

 

These include social workers supporting youngsters who have been sexually abused, helping families recover from domestic abuse, and giving parents the right help and support to develop secure and healthy relationships with their children.

 

 

Voluntary support

 

But to continue to provide these services, staff need more voluntary support from members of the public – in two key roles.

 

The first is to act as a driver, transporting service-users from their home to the Centre and back again, with the opportunity (although not essential) to also supervise a crèche for young children while the sessions are taking place.

 

The second is to volunteer to help another vital service called Pregnancy In Mind (PIM), which is designed to support parents who are at risk of, or experiencing mild to moderate anxiety and depression during pregnancy and the first year after birth.

 

Jan Davidson, who helps to run the classes, said: “Our volunteers are absolutely priceless to the organisation – we couldn’t do what we do without them. They do have to put something in, but they get a lot back too, knowing they have helped a vulnerable person at a time of need.

 

Full training

 

“All volunteers receive full training and get their expenses back. They are an incredibly valuable part of the NSPCC and we really need more help in Swindon. No qualifications are necessary – just a willingness to engage with and help our families.”

 

 

Drivers must have a clean driving licence and be able to give up about two hours of their time each week.

 

Meanwhile, PIM volunteers will receive 12 two-hour training sessions, before also committing to two hours each week.

 

All applicants will be subject to a value based interview, following by a DBS check.
