Why Do People Keep Going For A Job?Our Swindon business advice column with Gail Gibson
Why?
Because whilst on their personal quest for a
different working lifestyle, they very quickly return to the safety net of
“going for a job”.
This way of thinking really puzzles me. Recently
a colleague and I started presenting seminars and workshops to provide an
insight into the changing face of work and then to introduce the concept of
developing a portfolio career.
Much intrigue has been inspired (as commented on
by various attendees) via the title of our presentation – “How Colourful is
Your Umbrella?” This gets people thinking and leaves them wondering exactly
what an umbrella has to do with the idea of portfolio careers!
A
portfolio career is the creation of a working lifestyle based on your talents,
skills and passions, from which you derive an income. It’s as simple as that. What
could be harder than bringing balance to your life via a variety of different
methods, some of which give you an income, others of which you do for pleasure?
Is it really that difficult to understand and adapt to?
Belief is key
Back at
the start of this post I mentioned that a number of people I have met at our
seminars seem to love the idea of creating a portfolio career however they
continue to keep “going for a job”. So let’s take a look at why I feel this is
the case.
Fear,
belief, expectation and lack of time to focus are the primary factors. Fear of
change can strike even the most positive thinking and progressive individual.
Even when you are standing on the edge of the step, ready, armed and willing to
take a leap of faith, what stops you – fear. Is it a fear of not knowing where
your money will come from that holds you back?
Belief is
one of the most significant reasons why so many people don’t ever realise their
true potential. Admittedly, knowing what you are good at is one thing, however
believing that you can do something is an entirely different mindset. How much
do expect of yourself and your abilities? Are you a perfectionist who sets the
bar at an unattainable height? What are you striving to achieve?
When do you have the time to focus completely on
you, who you are, what you can do, and how you can make it all work for you?
Chances are rarely, especially as you are constantly searching for “a job”? What
if you were granted ONE day to spend the day with YOU? A day to focus on your
talents, your skills and your passions in life? Imagine what you could achieve
in that day?
Maybe you’d look no more for that elusive “job” that seems to be
getting so far out of reach?
