Lost At Sea?Our Swindon business advice column with Gail GibsonOnce upon a
time there was a beautiful ship, handcrafted with excellence, a jewel on the
ocean. On board this amazing vessel there was an experienced captain, a first mate,
and a crew with a kaleidoscope of personalities.
Setting
sail during fair weather the ship embarked on a new journey of discovery, one
that took the crew to amazing new places, full of new sights and new ports of
call. Sailing on the high seas the ship and her crew gathered together wealth
in all manner of things; riches from exotic places and memorable destinations
from which tall tales arose!
Success seemingly
came and continued with each rising tide. But one day, out of the blue, things
changed. All at once the captain and the crew were lost at sea, with no
direction. Dark clouds mounted on the horizon and a huge storm approached.
Fearing for their lives the captain and crew at once cleared the deck and hid.
The storm
hit with ferocity. The ship was damaged, almost beyond repair. The ship was
cast adrift, lost at sea, with no land in sight.
A
new day dawned and the crew headed to the decks to witness the aftermath of the
destruction. The captain did not surface. The crew did not know what to do. They
argued and fought about what should happen. The captain still did not surface.
The crew quickly realised the ship was sinking, but they did not know how to
plug the hole.
Still the
captain did not surface. So what was the captain doing? The captain chose to
stay below decks in the cabin and drink to excess. Non acceptance of change
took place. The captain chose not the go on deck and to help the crew. Surely
everything was alright and the crew as usual would steer a course for home?
How
many sinking ships have you met in business? Do you know a captain who keeps
their head down when the going gets tough? Do you know a captain who leaves
their crew to fix a sinking ship? Have you met a captain who is so far removed
from the business, who can’t see the treasure for the waves?
Here are two
questions for this captain:
- What will you do to stop your
ship from smashing onto the rocks, right now?
- How open are you to choose a
new course, to discover your True North, and to sail into a glorious
sunset?
