Does Your LinkedIn Profile Represent You?Our Swindon business advice column with Gail GibsonAlmost
daily, do you receive a message from LinkedIn saying someone would like to
connect with you? Upon receipt of the invitation what do you typically do
first?
You view the person’s profile to see where the connection originated
from or whether it has come via a recommendation from one of your existing
connections.
When you view an individual’s profile what do you look for - a professional image of the person and well-written, grammatically correct content? Surely these are keys to creating a great first impression online? Unfortunately these two vital elements are often overlooked by many people. Today while on Linked In I received two invitations to connect. Both profiles were viewed, paying particular interest to the above ‘profile-checkers’, to see the potential opportunity to connect. Both profiles failed to meet my standard and they
left a poor first impression. As a result it is my choice NOT to connect with
either individual.
So what did they fail to do?
Invitation 1: Incorrect spelling of the current
position title. Low resolution, unprofessional image with the subject looking
away from the camera.
Invitation 2: No professional image. Current position and previous job titles all typed in lowercase. Various spelling errors and poor grammar throughout the profile.
How can these profiles be improved?
1. Add a professional, high quality image of yourself to match brand
you. This is your online opportunity to build relationships with others
who can help you grow your business. No image = no connection. People will
think, “Who am I actually dealing with?”
Book a session with a Swindon
photographer who can take a series of professional headshots you can use to
market you and your business.
2. Always check and recheck your spelling and grammar to ensure you match brand
you. Copywriting not one of your strengths? Outsource to a professional
Swindon copywriter who can create your profile to showcase your
experience, talents and skills in the most effective way.
3. Make sure all job titles, headings, names and towns
begin with a capital letter. Swindon not swindon, Business Coach not business
coach etc.
When you
create the right first impression online, you present you and your brand with a
greater opportunity to build positive connections, and to grow and thrive in business.
