Why it’s vital to network when you work from home
Our weekly Swindon business advice column with Gail Gibson
Are you one of many people today who run a small business from home?
Do you sometimes get a little stir crazy being confined in four walls?
Do you leave the confines of your home office to be with people from time to time?
Or is your computer your only companion?
There are many reasons why people choose to work from home. With the fast changing job market, there are a lot more freelance workers who don’t need to go to and from a particular place of work. Their home is their office and they communicate and do business via the internet.
Working from a spare room in your house can be cost effective i.e. you have no office rent/rates to pay. Perhaps it’s a lifestyle choice i.e. it fits around your family life. These are just two of many significant advantages to being based at home. However there can be a downside.
Before you chose to work from home, think about the type of environment you worked in? Was it a busy office filled with many staff? A place where you could speak to someone about a problem, concern or issue you might have had? Now that you are at home alone to whom do you turn to for advice or simply just to have a chat? Agreed, you can ask your computer, but conversing with other humans is a definite must.
Face to face networking is a great outlet because it gives you an opportunity to talk to other likeminded individuals, to discuss ideas and issues, but most of all it provides you with human contact. Humans are social creatures who thrive on interaction and networking is one platform for you to achieve this. Don’t stay cooped up at home with a head full of ideas or problems. Join a networking group near you, start a conversation and discover solutions and ways to progress both you and your business.
Alternatively, making time to grab a coffee and chat with a friend or colleague might be all it takes to refresh and re energise your thoughts and to unleash your creativity.
So go on, get out and get talking!
