Media Symposium

Swindon takes on the future of media
Individuals and companies involved in media were invited to attend a seminar tonight, to discuss plans for Swindon's growing audio-visual industry.

The conference explored the power of resources such as a film desk and incubation space, and how they can be used to promote the creative talent and varied multi-media services currently working in the area.

"There are so many organisations and indivduals working in this industry," commented seminar organiser Peter Snowman, Director of the Swindon Film Festival, "and the aim tonight is for people to have the opportunity to get together and to shape its future and to decide how it can be best supported."

Over one hundred people attended the seminar, which was held at the University of Bath in Swindon, representing various fields including film direction, editing, video streaming, location management, animation and television.

Guest speakers included those from the Wessex Media Group, South West Screen, SkillSet and Swindon's Cre8 Studios.

Subjects discussed included the formation of a local media group; opportunities in film and production; funding, training and support; new facilities/incubation space; and the opportunity for screening opportunities in Swindon.

"Swindon has a growing audio-visual industry with enormous potential," said Gaby Door, Media teacher at St Joseph's Catholic College.

"It's crucial we network and form a coherent plan to take advantage of the media resources in the area, not only to help those within the industry at the moment, but also to encourage school children in the future to get involved as well."
