Bike to Work Day

Try TWO wheels instead of four this Wednesday as part of Bike Week 2014

Wednesday 18 June 2014

Expect to see more bikes on the road in Swindon during rush hour this Wednesday as part of Bike Week 2014.

Swindon Travel Choices and Sustrans have organised Swindon Bike to Work Day on June 18th, which aims to encourage the workers of Swindon to give cycling to work a go to win goodies and a free cycle safety check courtesy of local bike shop Recycles.

Some major companies will even be battling it out to see how many employees they can get on two wheels instead of four on the day.

Zurich, Swindon Borough Council, National Trust, Patheon and Research Councils offices are all taking part.

Everyone encouraged to use their bike on the day

Although only employees at workplaces signed up to the Bike to Work Day competition will be eligible to win prizes, Sustrans and Swindon Travel Choices are encouraging as many people as possible to leave the car at home for the day and try cycling instead.

Sustrans Project Officer Matt Jones said: “Only about 5% of people cycle to work in Swindon, but the potential for more is massive, with over 100km of cycle routes in the area.”

“Cycling to work in Swindon makes sense. It’s cheap, fast and good for your health and with the congestion problems in the town centre, there’s never been a better time to take to two wheels.”

The day itself is part of National Bike Week with lots of events and activities in Swindon to get involved in, including free cyclist breakfasts, bike safety checks, and bike security marking.
