Who’s Expectations?
How to make the best business start to 2010
In February the world was entertained by an amazing winter Olympic spectacular, set in the glorious Rocky Mountains in Vancouver. Two weeks of adrenalin pumping skiing, bob sleigh, figure skating and so much more…And two weeks of the world’s top winter athletes aiming for the highest sporting accolade – a gold medal. Was the medal a personal expectation, a coach’s expectation, or a country’s expectation?
In the course of an athlete’s training, steps or objectives are put in place to achieve milestones or goals, to improve performance etc. Likewise in business, you set yourself objectives and goals to progress/develop/grow. Along the journey both you and an athlete will meet levels of expectation i.e. how/what will you improve, how/what will you achieve, how will your profits double etc
Before we rush headlong down the Olympic black run, let us consider WHO it is that sets the expectation? For an athlete, being the best in the world in his/her chosen field is the ultimate prize wouldn’t you agree?
To work toward achieving his/her prize, an athlete is surrounded by mentors, coaches, family and friends; to support, encourage, prepare and develop an athlete to reach the medal. Who then is responsible for the expectation placed on the athlete? Who desires the medal? What will the medal “do” for them? In your business do you surround yourself with associates who can nurture, build and help you develop your ideas? Who is creating your expectations?
Go for Gold
In my personal opinion an athlete’s expectation is a two way street. To win gold is a personal triumph, personally expected, prepared and trained for by an individual. So too does the triumph belong to the coach and support team, who placed expectation in the ability of the athlete. How does this differ to running a small business?
Your expectations belong to
YOU. You had a business vision, you put systems in place, and you built your business with the help of supportive people. You set your expectations to achieve or fail. Do you
SEE your expectations? Do you see yourself standing on the podium winning your gold medal?
Visualise your expectations. Hold onto your thoughts and the feelings they represent; how you feel, what you recognise in yourself, how you have grown. See your victory because no one else can simply because your expectations belong to you.
Along your business journey don’t fall into the trap of being too harsh on yourself if you don’t meet your own expectations. You’re only human so have compassion for yourself. Reassess what you did and work out an alternative – maybe ask for help?
Know that you will always have the choice to have another go. Hold your head high as you strive for gold!
