The Vintage Look

Look bang up-to-date by stepping back in time this autumn and winter!

Vintage Look in Swindon
For this month's look at what's hot on the high street in Swindon town centre, it's time to take a look back to yesteryear for our fashion inspiration.

And no - just in case you were worried - we aren't talking about the 1980s - power dressing, shoulder pads and all that. Nor the 70s - although we do love the current Glam Rock look that's in at the moment.

You'll have to go back further than that to the days when your mum or grandmother were born - the 1950s, 40s and even the most fabulous of decades, the 1920s! Perfect for the party season coming up!

Prepare yourself to go Vintage!

Knitwear

Let's get the essential items sorted first. And with the winter breezes picking up it's timely to make sure you're wrapped up warm and looking good.

And doesn't she look just that in our main picture (right) in Primark's latest blues and browns perfectly matched.

We also like this cardigan from New Look in Regent Street (below left) with a lovely femine style.

You can just imagine being a 1940s sweetheart wearing this. A square knit in a boxy fit with a wood look button fasten front.

M&S also have some very good value sleeve-knitted tops (above right) in stock at below £20 with nicely dated detail around the neck.

Put either together with trousers (or should we say slacks) and you have the perfect weekend look.

Something more sexy?

We know knitwear is hardly head-turning but now we've covered one basic item for your vintage winter wardrobe we can now start to talk about showing off your figure.

Forties and fifties pin-ups were all about the hour-glass - remember Swindon's very own blonde bombshell Diana Dors?

Think curves and sexy red lippy here and you're on the right track.

The Daisy Lowe collection at Peacocks in The Parade shows this off beautifully (see below left). A fabulous 40's inspired dress in a daring shade of purple at just £17.50.

Or what about this fantastic navy beaded shift dress from Miss Selfridge (bottom right) with gold embellishements. Just add a skinny belt to give it a 'nipped-in' look.

Top tip:

It's all about the waist - not the bust!

You can take any blouse or dress and pop on a belt to really emphasise your hips and vital statistics.

..... or just a little touch of nostalgia!

With any look it all depends on you. If you feel OK with it then go for it. But if you don't then that's fine.

Vintage means adding anything you like really - it could even be something your mum has given you, like a floral scarf or a handbag.

Just add a bygone accessory to something more modern and hey presto - you're stepping out on trend!

Vintage hair - half up & half down!

You could say it's all about the clothes, but why not have the hair as well!

It's easy to do the vintage look, just ask your hairdresser. And in Swindon town centre they have some of the best in the country!

And for the real McCoy.....

Vintage Swindon
Then you must visit a fantastic independent shop in Morley Street with a name that sums up what they do - Vintage.

Packed full of clothes of every size and from every era - from the 20s to the 80s - it's a must stop-off no matter what your style.

They even do 'Vintage Hair Workshops'!
