Footfall up in Swindon town centre
Big and small traders benefit as shoppers buck the UK trend despite the rain
June was a good month for shoppers visiting Swindon town centre despite the rain.
During one of the wettest summer months on record, footfall increased by 7% compared to June 2011. Other high streets across the UK suffered a 5.5%
reduction.
A million of those visitors made their way to the Brunel Centre, representing a 3% rise compared to this time last year with retailers reporting a 2.9% increase in sales.
Pleasant surprise for independents
Independent traders such as Vince Ayris Keycutting & Engraving in Havelock Street also reported a good month.
"We're not under cover here and the weather hasn't been great, but the numbers have been a pleasant surprise," Mr Ayris commented.
"I'd like to think it's the great service we provide that brings people back even when it's raining, so thanks to everyone who continues to make the effort to come here." |
