End of an era in Swindon

Two long-standing Swindon businesses all set to retire

Barry Gilbert will be putting out his fresh fish and veg for the last time on Saturday morning, the day he'll bring down the shutters on Gilbert's Fishmongers in Groundwell Road.

After 20 years serving the people of Swindon with the likes of Dover sole, jellied eels, trout, cod, mackerel and herrings, Barry is retiring.

"It's sad to be closing, but I've been thinking about it for a while to be honest," Barry told us.

"I'm really looking forward to spending more time with the family and at 64 I think it's the right time. It will be the customers that I'll miss the most. Over the years I've met some fantastic people."

Traditional trades

Barry's decision comes just a few weeks after another well known family business and traditional trade in Swindon is also closing due to retirement.

John Treasure tailors in Old Town is winding down after 81 years, after current owner Peter Treasure announced he is swapping Swindon for the sunny climate of Spain later this year.

"It's purely down to the success of the business that I've got the option to retire," said Peter.

"And after 26 years I have decided to take it. I'm not getting any younger and I really looking forward to spending more time on the golf course while I still can."

Peter plans to open his tailors for the last time near Easter.

"I'm winding everything down and having a big sale. And taking time to say thanks to all the customers that I have served over the years."
