Swindon's Championship dream is still alive after winning a dramatic penalty shoot-out.

 

With the aggregate scores tied at 3-3 after ninety minutes and extra-time it came down to spot kicks at The Valley to decide who would go through to the League One Play-Off Final on Bank Holiday Saturday.

 

And after Nicky Bailey missed the second penalty for Charlton, while McGovern, Austin, Amankwaah and Ward all cooly converted for the Reds, it was left to young defender Stephen Darby to send the Robins to the Twin Towers.

 

The Liverpool loanee making no mistake as he drilled the ball past Randolph to send 3,000 travelling Town fans - and thousands more watching at home on SKY Sports - into raptures.

 

"Our character pulled us through and we deserved it," said a modest Danny Wilson.

 

"All credit to the lads. We'll celebrate tonight and then see who we get in the final."

 

Back from the brink

 

It all looked black for Town 2-0 down mid-way through the second-half when captain Gordon Greer was dismissed for a high tackle.

 

That after leading scorer Billy Paynter had been substituted with what looked like a reoccurence of his hamstring injury and keeper Dave Lucas was replaced by Phil Smith - after only five minutes.

 

But when Danny Ward took the opportunity to poke home a lifeline following a defensive mix up - and Llera was sent-off in injury-time, Swindon had the momentum going into extra-time.

 

A period when Charlton hit the post and Deon Burton also missed the chance to win it for the home side with almost the last kick of the game.
