Pride and sorrow
Wootton Bassett a standstill for Lt Colonel Rupert Thornloe and Trooper Joshua Hammond
Wootton Bassett was brought to a standstill again today for the repatriation of Lieutenant Colonel Rupert Thornloe and Trooper Joshua Hammond – Thornloe the highest ranking soldier to die to so far in the Afgan Conflict.
Both were victims of roadside bombs in Helmand province last week. Lt. Colonel Thornloe, 39, was the commanding officer of the Welsh Guards with over 1,000 men under his control. Trooper Hammond of the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment was a month from his 19th birthday when he died. Another repatriation is expected later this week after two more casulaties over the weekend.
