Swindon helped start the official countdown to next summer’s Olympic Games with a special event in the town centre this weekend.
A host of games and activities took place at the London 2012 Live Site at Wharf Green to mark the Games’ ‘One Year to Go’ milestone.
The Challenge Swindon event, organised by Swindon Borough Council’s Leisure Services team in partnership with inSwindon and Forward Swindon, showcased local sporting talent designed to encourage people to be more active, more often.
The sporting and cultural activities included demonstrations and displays by Espirit Gymnastics Club. Wheelchair basketball was also exhibited and to finish the day was a ‘Keepy-up Challenge’, with spot prizes from Swindon Town Football Club.
The event aimed to promote what Swindon has to offer and challenge local residents to get involved. Olympic and Paralympic-related films were also screened on the Big Screen and the first official outdoor screening of the Tate Movie: The Itch of the Golden Nit!, which had been created by thousands of children across the UK and produced by the creators of Wallace and Gromit.
London 2012-themed interactive games
A selection of London 2012-themed interactive games were also played out on the Big Screen including the mascot motion sensor game ‘Swim Wenlock Swim’,
“The London Olympics is going to be a superb occasion and we are thrilled to start our countdown with a fantastic line-up of events and activities," commented Cllr Garry Perkins, Swindon Borough Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Culture.
“We are lucky to have one of the designated London 2012 Live Sites and we will be holding many more events like this in the town centre as we build-up to next summer.”
