Last Post In Highworth Market Square
Couple bid farewell as service moves to local Co-Op
After eight-and-a-half-years serving the people of Highworth, Paul & Karen Burdett bid a sad farewell today as the Post Office in the market square closed for the final time.
The service will now move to the local Co-Op supermarket, just off the High Street, as of Monday.
One of their last customers, former Mayor Ken Poulton, was there to say goodbye just after 12.30pm and to thank the couple for all their hard work, dedication and for being such valued members of the community.
"They'll be sorely, sorely missed," Ken commented, "everyone says how friendly the post office always was. More than just a place to buy stamps and things.
"But at least Highworth still has a post office. It was so important we kept one in the town."
The iconic red letter boxes that many thought would remain have been already removed. Current plans for the building, which was a familiar sight for thousands over the years and is now for sale, are unknown.
