The Oasis
Swindon's world-famous dome and pool
The first day of 1976 introduced Swindon and rest of the world to the wonder that is 'The Oasis'.
Owned and commisioned by Swindon Borough Council, the truly innovative space-frame design for the town's flagship leisure centre was soon attracting thousands of pleasure seekers keen to experience the lagoon style pool area and the famous wave machine. The addition of three giant "Domebuster" slides and a sports hall extension were made during the early 80's. To prove its world-wide fame and longevity, the Oasis experience had a particularly dramatic effect on one Noel Gallagher who decided to call his new band (guess who?) after a visit there in 1993 (see story below).
