Fenella Harrop is co-directing Hamlet. "As Laurence Olivier once said, 'Hamlet is the tragedy of a man who couldn't make up his mind.' That's very true but I think it's also a play about people who do make up their minds – in the wrong way! Each major character, at some point, is faced with a decision. Their choice seals their fate." Fenlla says that her role as co-director gives her the chance to make sure that OTTC's Hamlet is as accessible as possible. "I seem to be fulfilling the role of the seven year old in the room! I'm the one who says 'I don't get it' and hopefully ensure that things make sense. Shakespeare is often regarded as dusty, old fashioned and impenetrable. Finding ways to reveal that it's actually as vibrant, moving, relevant, and exciting as any contemporary drama is our challenge, and it's great fun too!" |
