Dave accepts that the challenge in performing Shakespeare is to make it accessible. "Shakespeare get such a bad rap because it's something forced on people and even then, forced badly without giving them a chance to find their own way into it. At its worst, Shakespeare is institutionalized and elitist; a far cry from the ‘theatre for the masses – something for everyone' that Shakey himself would have wanted. Yes, the language is difficult but it can be made more accessible. After all, rugby or football can be complicated to the newcomer but that doesn't stop it being exciting, enjoyable and highly addictive once you do get to grips with it! You put a little in and I promise you'll get a lot more out!" |
