But why would St John need to know how to apply fake injury make-up anyway?

"Well, that's all about the First Aid at Work courses that we run. Anyone who attends, has to carry out an assessment of their skills."

To do that St John run a casualty simulation on the last day of the course, with actors made-up to simulate various injuries.

"We try and make it as realistic as possible, with bleeding wounds, bruises and fractures. Students have to actually find the injuries, so knowing how to accurately make-up a bruise could mean a fracture beneath."
