Wootton Bassett dates back to Saxon times, and was originally known as 'Woodeton'.
When the Manor became the property of Alan Bassett (who signature can be seen on the preface of the Magna Carta) in and about 1200AD, he expanded the town so much that his name was added as a suffix and evolved to what is now known as Wootton Bassett.
Granted permission by Henry III to hold a market in 1219, the town has always been a busy meeting place for local farmers and was once larger than its near neighbour Swindon.
The Town's most famous landmark, the old Town Hall was built in the 17th century and now serves as a museum.
