Where to enjoy a fresh fishy on a dishy in Swindon

 

Sometimes the old traditions are the best and we think there's still something rightfully special about enjoying fish on a Friday.

 

Yes, you could grab a portion of cod & chips from your local chippie - and there are some very good ones here in Swindon (see below) - but if you want to eat out and sit down to a proper plate of plaice, red mullet or haddock, then where do you go?

Listed below are the places (no puns!) that put on a special fish menu every Friday lunchtime. No dish is guaranteed every week because it depends on the catch of the day, of course, but for top quality these pubs and restaurants are known to make an extra effort when Friday comes.

A complete fish menu is available every day at 20 at the Kings in Old Town, Swindon.

 

Ten different fish dishes available everyday, so fresh we can even tell you which boat it was caught on!
Sardines, rock salmon, lemon sole, mackerel, grey mullet and more....

This place goes the whole hog when it comes to fish by boasting it's the best 'in southern England!' So popular, in fact, they serve it everyday now.

 

 

Landlord Bill certainly knows his cod and believes there are four secrets to serving the very, very best fish & chips.

 

1. Source the finest Icelandic cod

2. Coat the fish with rice cones not flour

3. The batter mixture must be just right (his secret recipe)

4. The oil right must be at the perfect temperature

The Fox & Hounds, Wroughton

 

The Fox & Hounds at Wroughton is everything you'd expect from a modern place to relax, eat & drink.

 

And best of all, they serve a couple of fabulous fish dishes on their menu including traditional fish & chips with an Arkells beer batter and minted peas or a homemade fish pie with seasonal vegetables and lemon.

Every Friday sees the Friday Fish Special at The Red Lion, Castle Eaton with fresh cod and chips to eat in for just £7.25! Alternatively they do a take out service for £5.50!

A place well worth the drive to for food and especially on a Friday.

 

Again it depends on the Catch of the Day and what's on their specials board but there's always a very good selection of fish on offer - and always fresh.
