Best Burger in SwindonAnd we're not talking McDonalds here. Gourmet!
No offence to the yellow arches but we know where you can tuck into a burger in Swindon that's a little bit.... different.
We're talking gourmet here - not fast food. Burgers that are literally more than 'bun' of a kind!
Below we list the best places where a burger can be not just beef but lamb - and those locally sourced too - served with hand-cut chips or fries and inbetween fresh bread that's better than cardboard.
And not forgetting the veggie burger, we know where to order one that's a genuine meat-free alternative.
NOTE: We cannot guarantee that all the dishes mentioned below are available. Our advice is to call the venue before arriving.
The Fox & Hounds
The picture below says it all, with four choices of gourmet burgers available - beef with pulled pork; beef and bacon; a grilled chicken and a minted lamb. All served with thick cut chips and coleslaw.
Gourmet Burger Kitchen
The self-styled burger kings opened in Swindon last year, and just a glance at their website shows that when it comes to burgers these guys mean business!
Ed's Easy Diner
Swindon Designer Outlet
Trust the Americans! If Elvis were alive - and in Swindon - this is where the King would spend lunchtime with hamburger in hand.
The best has to be the legendary Big Bubba Burger - lettuce, tomato, onion, dill pickle, mayonnaise and mild American mustard + plus sweet-cured bacon and American cheese.
Open til 8pm Mon-Fri; 7pm Sat & 5pm Sunday.
The Harrow Inn
A choice of award-winning burgers locally-sourced from the nearby Hinton Marsh Farm - and 50% bigger.
Lamb or Beef (Taste Awards 2013) plus a toasted onion burger bun, 1000 island sauce, cos lettuce, gherkin and hand-cut chips for £10.95.
Served every lunchtime & evening.
Swindon town centre
These people know how to cook a good burger! And what a selection. Even a skinny burger with no bun. Or a Rudi's Mexican?
VEGETARIAN: Rudi's Spiced Bean Burger. With deep-fried Jalapenos filled with cream cheese.
The Crown at Broad Hinton
Special Handmade Burgers
The pub, just 4 miles outside Swindon on the Devizes Road, is run by Anthony & Clare Edwards, who are very proud indeed of their burger specialities.
Prime beef, spicy bean and BBQ pulled pork burgers are all on the menu - and all hand-made.
Full details on their website.
A burger main-stay since 1990. And still doing more than just flippin' em with ten amazing flavour combinations to choose from. Very moreish sides!!
There's also something about a summer evening burger in the garden at Mackenzies with a nice cool beer that just hits the spot (so here's waiting for warmer weather!)
Here these well-known steak specialists serve what they call hamburguesa - a unique Mediterranean blend of ground beef and pork, onion, garlic and smokey sweet paprika; all hand-made.
Choose between el Torita, el Toro or Picante (with hot brava sauce) at lunchtime or evening. Or a Piri Piri Chicken Burger.
The Royal Oak
And finally, for those who prefer the purely organic option, it does not get any better than the Michelin-rated Royal Oak at Bishopstone for burgers that are truly gourmet.
Made with 100% organic beef, farmed locally, the choice is the Eastbrook beef burger with chips, salad and aioli (which is a Provencal sauce!) or the mini burger with salad and chips.
On the go...
Give them a try. A little bit more than your normal quarter-pounder but well worth the extra.
