The Taming of the Shrew

Hello and thanks for visiting the Old Town Theatre Company's latest production!

William Shakespeare's Taming of The Shrew is one of his most controversial, with its very chauvinistic approach to male-female relationships.

For those unfamiliar with the storyline, it's essentially this...

Baptista has two daughters: Kate and Bianca. Everyone wants to wed the fair Bianca, but nobody's much interested in problem child, Kate. Baptista declares that he won't give Bianca away in a marriage until he's found a husband for Kate, so all the suitors begin busily hunting out a madman who's willing to do it, and they find Petruchio: a man who's come to "Wive it wealthily in Padua". Petruchio marries Kate with a plan to tame her, while everybody else begins scheming to win Bianca's hand.

In the Elizabethan era, a husband was expected to control his wife. Shakespearean drama often studied the resultant chaos when assigned roles are inverted, so it should come as little surprise that the customary moral of this play is that a woman will find happiness and true love only when she learns her proper place in the grand scheme of things.

Despite its blatant lack of political correctness by today's standards, there is considerable fun to be had in this play!

OTTC has decided to set this classic tale in the modern day world of gangsters and hoodlums, adding yet another dimension to the story; providing us with yet another challenge and audiences with an entertaining night out!
