Kitchen Appliances

Don't forget your 3 Ps - Power, Plumbing & Placement

Once again, there's a very simple rule when it comes to choosing your kitchen appliances:

The 3 Ps

Power, Plumbing & Placement

All three of those have to work to make the appliance position practical - be that the oven, dishwasher or washing machine.

The basic example above shows a U-shaped kitchen and the approximate space needed for appliances to abide by the 3Ps rule.

Evaluating how much room you've got to play with and where certain appliances can realistically be positioned must be completed before choosing can begin.

Questions to think about:

Is the washing machine in the kitchen?

If you can make room by shifting it out into an another area then brilliant, if not, be sure to position it so that plumbing is easy, as well as loading and uploading. Same goes if you have a tumble dryer.

Have you room for a dishwasher?

One of those appliances that really are a 'must have' for many people - but do you have room?

Once you've got one you'll never go back to the marigolds and fairy liquid again. But fitting them in to a tight kitchen area can be tricky.

Modern designs and varying sizes do make accommodating one easier than ever, however. Just make sure you position it near the sink.

They don't all coming in boring white either!

Extractor fans?

We don't want nasty smells (or, more seriously, unhealthy fumes) from the kitchen eminating around the house, do we? That's why an extractor fan or hood is essential in a modern kitchen, but knocking the hole in the wall to fit it is not a straightforward task. Definitely ask the experts on this.

Gas or electric?

A major plumbing issue here. And also a major cooking one as well. Some people much prefer cooking with gas because of the flexibility in controlling the temperature. So are you a gourmet chef or just someone who has a no-frills approach?

The type of cooker you choose will also depend on the size of your family. A single person more suited to eating out, take-aways and the odd bit of entertaining is obviously different from a spacious kitchen needed for a growing family. Size really matters here!

Top tip:

Our advice is to seek expert advice and ask a plumber or a builder, if needs be, what can and can't be done. It'll be time well spent (a quotation may even be free) so at least you'll know exactly where you stand before you hit the showrooms.

Choosing your appliance

This is very much the best bit - but can also be the most frustrating!

The choice available these days is quite huge and each manufacturer will tell you why their make and model is the one for you.

But after all your preparation, only you know what fits and what you can afford.

Buy with function and style, energy-efficiency and with easy-clean surfaces in mind.

Fridges

One dramatic effect the United States has had on our habits is our growing need for bigger and better fridges!

Some are so sophisticated that they've even become TVs! Needless to say, though, a nice fridge is a brilliant asset to a kitchen, so done skimp on it if you can help it.

But remember, if you do want an ice-making fridge, you'll need a water feed into the back of it!

Dishwashers

This all depends on how noisy you want it to be, and, quite obviously, how clean you want your dishes. They all get quieter and more thorough with price, so no shock there.

Ovens

Steam Oven
Space saver:
Steam ovens are proving popular
for their compact design and
health benefits
Another category with plenty of options. We've already covered the issue of gas or electric, but some manufacturers can offer both!

Or if the budget isn't a problem, why not step-back-time by go for a wood-burning Aga? Combination ovens also offer the chance to incorporate a microwave in with the oven - ideal if space is at a premium.

And for those with busy lifestyles - and let's face it, who hasn't - a self-cleaning oven can be a godsend. Most now offer this facility.

Top tip:

Once again, ask question of those who know best. They know all the answers because they've probably dealt with exactly your scenario fifteen time before. If you can take a plan of your kitchen along to a showroom the better.

You can also instruct your kitchen installer to source your appliances and who he buys them from.
