Best of British!

The following review appeared in the Swindon Advertiser (www.thisiswiltshire.co.uk) on 8 September 2007. (The scan below is of the actual review in the newspaper; it is used, along with Ros Hollands' words, with the kind permission of the Swindon Advertiser.):

It's a Classic, Mr Mainwaring!

Best of British! review in the Swindon Advertiser
The Old Town Theatre Company never cease to amaze me with the plays they perform.

This was billed as an evening of the best in British comedy at the Arts Centre - Dad's Army, Tony Hancock's Blood Donor sketch and Fawlty Towers. Only OTTC would take this on, but the plays were cast extremely well.

John Marshall triumphed as Tony Hancock. This was a good performance of a very difficult piece. His portrayals of Sgt Wilson and Manuel also need a mention.

Ashley Heath was a memorable Basil Fawlty. Superb. And I never liked this show. It used to drive me mad but I actually laughed this time. Ashley's [blonde] hair had even turned black - nothing left to chance again by this well drilled company.

Memorable characterisations came from Richard Large as Pike in the Dad's Army episode, also Mark Soffe as the U-Boat captain.

All these well loved characters were played to the full by a cast who thoroughly enjoyed themselves throughout - and far too many to mention.

Ashley Heath and Julian Smith took on the task of directors for the plays and did a marvellous job.

Staging was also well thought out, as the set had to be in place for the three plays - a potential nightmare for backstage staff. They triumphed too.

Well done to OTTC once again. The audience loved it and so did I.

If you missed it, DON'T PANIC! It's also on tonight at 7.30pm.

"A really enjoyable show"
