 Sweeney Todd in RehearsalThe gruesome tale of Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, is probably one of England's earliest examples of an urban legend. In 1846 Sweeney first appeared as the main antagonist in a Penny Dreadfull serial called The String of Pearls, and it wasn't long before people started to claim that it was based on a true story.
