The Vortex

New boy acts his socks off

The following review appeared in the Swindon Advertiser on Friday 27 February 2009 and, along with the photograph, is reproduced with their kind permission:

Due to a heavy schedule this week, I went along to the dress rehearsal of Old Town Theatre Company's latest production. This company is blessed with superb amateur actors and newcomers who shine.

In this instance, the terrifically talented Owen Fishwick, who for a first venture onto stage, performed out of his socks. The young man has quite a future with this and other companies I'm sure. I loved him.

The exceptional actress that is Wendy Vickery was made for her role as Florence Lancaster. Her emotive portrayal throughout the play culminated in a stunning last scene with Owen. It left me completely spellbound and shedding a tear here and there. All for the right reasons, I hasten to add. I have yet to see her play a role that I haven't been totally enamoured with. This was no exception.

Rather than name everyone, it's sufficient to say that there wasn't a weak link in this play from start to finish. All characterisations were of the time. Costumes, lighting, music and a simple set made for a stunning performance from this well established, clever company.

The play could have so easily been "over the top". However, excellent direction from Michael Bull, himself an established actor, proved its worth on every count. The ten strong cast are to be congratulated on a job well done. I enjoyed it immensely.

Old Town Theatre Company has surely established itself over the years as one of the premier theatre companies in our area. I'm sure that's not just my opinion either. The Vortex is on until tomorrow.
