Wyrd Sisters

The following review appeared in the Swindon Advertiser (www.thisiswiltshire.co.uk) on 10 October 2005:

Where angels fear to tread

Old Town Theatre Company have once again come up with another of those plays that others would not attempt.

Terry Pratchett's Wyrd Sisters really wasn't my cup of tea. That said, it doesn't mean that it wasn't good.

OTTC never leave things to chance and always do their homework. Sound in this one was particularly good, well thought out and produced. Lighting was atmospheric and the simple set worked. Director Michael Bull chose to give the play a pantomime flavour, while others may have gone for the medieval touch. I'm still trying to sort out whether it was a stroke of genius or a mistake.

I was interested to hear other members of the audience giving their opinions during the interval. It seemed a lot of them had read the book, from which most of the dialogue for the play is taken, word for word. It's not a good idea to compare the two as you can't possibly get the same visual effects on stage as you do in the book.

The three witches, Rosemary Curtis, Jane Dale and Clare Rasheed entered into their characters with great style. I love Clare's slow delivery, and didn't she look charming in her long curly wig? No stereotypical witches in this play.

Wendy Vickery and David Howell played the baddies well with Richard Large literally playing the fool.

All the players entered into the spirit of the thing.

I am never disappointed by anything this company produces. Even if it isn't really for me.
